Planning your career
Planning out a career path requires a great deal of effort, dedication, research and time. Some of the major steps are:
Self reflection
Even before creating a resume it is important to take time to contemplate yourself. Who are you and what is most important in your life? List things you like and things you dislike, your strengths and weaknesses, your personal beliefs, interests and passions. Writing a list of goals can also be useful. Goals can include the kind of job or career you would like, achieving a better or different education and personal and lifestyle goals.
Gathering information
Thoroughly research different careers that may interest you. Use the web, the library, ask for information from your CJC team or people who you know who are already working in the industry you are interested in.
Making decisions
Reflecting on your research, you can also think about the positive and negative aspects for careers you are interested in. Eliminate and then select the options best suited to you. Tick off the criteria that best matches your goals, values, skills and attributes. Also evaluate your choices against your short-term and long-term goals.
Plan a pathway
Once you have chosen a career, start thinking about how you are going to achieve your goals. Perhaps you could consider looking for paid or voluntary work, and further education or qualifications. Set yourself realistic targets for achieving each step, and don’t forget to update your resume as you progress along your career pathway.
