Carrick Community Care Update

Carrick Community Care has a strong focus on ensuring the welfare and wellbeing of all students.

This month, Carrick has been involved in a pilot project to raise awareness of women’s health issues among female international students, immigrants and refugees.

Carrick was invited by the Multicultural Centre for Women’s health (MCWH) to help raise awareness of women’s health and the overall well-being of female international students studying in Melbourne.

Thirty Carrick Community Welfare students took part in focus groups conducted by MCWH to ascertain what international students learn about women’s health and wellbeing in their home countries, what they would like to know in Australia and what issues they may face in Australia.

MCWH are trying determine the best way to reach out to female immigrants and refugees through this project and if successful, the MCWH will be able to deliver effective health programs to this group which will be a fantastic resource for Carrick students.

In this update, Carrick would also like to emphasise our commitment to minimising exploitation of students in the workplace.

Carrick has a zero tolerance policy on student exploitation in the workforce and has methods to ensure a conducive learning environment in the workplace, including:

  • Carrick Jobs and Careers meet with every potential employer to discuss the conditions of employment for Carrick students.
  • Carrick Jobs and Careers partnerships with industry are formalised relationships to ensure Carrick students are exposed to professional working environments.
  • Carrick’s industry board CIIC also meets regularly with industry leaders to discuss the expectations of employers.
  • Carrick holds regular Industrial Relations Seminars on campus to discuss with students their work rights and what to do if they encounter any problems.

All student work based training is organised through Carrick Jobs and Careers to ensure students are gaining quality work based training to complement their studies at Carrick.
