Carrick's very own master chefs
Five Carrick students make up the Carrick team taking part in a Melbourne schools cooking competition. The five talented students, Jeffrey, Soravit (Lee), Younkyoung (Kay), Vibha and Daniel have been picked out of a potential 1000 students to represent us among the five other schools competing including, Hales, Meridian, Victoria University and William Anglis.
The competition is being held next week and the team will be asked to prepare an entrée, main and dessert over the course of three hours. The winning team will each receive an engraved cup, vouchers to spend at Club Chef, a one day tour of the Yarra Valley and of course recognition for being top amongst their peers.
The Carrick team have been hard at work preparing for this challenge. With the help of hospitality teachers, Graeme Chalmers, Murray Twaits and Richard Scarf, the team has been cooking up a storm to get ready for the ubiquitous “mystery box” of ingredients they will be faced with on the day.
The cooking competition starts at 9am in South Melbourne and we will keep you up-to-date with how the Carrick team goes.
We wish Jeffrey, Lee, Kay, Vibha and Daniel the very best of luck.
Carrick team profiles:
Jeffrey, Indonesia Stage 4
Jeffrey has been in Melbourne for two years and says cooking is part of him and his family. He has been interested in cooking since an early age as his mum owns a restaurant in Indonesia. Jeffrey loves cooking Indonesian food and all things spicy. He currently works at a café/sandwich bar in the city that serves breakfast and lunch and has aspirations to open an Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne.
Soravit Riremkul (Lee), Thailand Stage 6
Lee has spent the last 4 ½ years in Melbourne and has been at Carrick for 1½ years. Lee decided to get into cooking as he loved experimenting with food and creating dishes out of unusual food and flavour combinations. In the future Lee wants to cook in the style of molecular gastronomy meaning fusing unusual combinations to make new, interesting and delicious dishes.
Vibha Somesh, India Stage 6
Vibha studied a Bachelor of Hospitality in India and completed her Masters at VU in Melbourne before starting commercial cookery at Carrick. Vibha realised that she loved the practical side of hospitality rather than management and so is now studying commercial cookery. Younkyoung Goh (Kay), Korea Stage 6.

Now Kay is well on her way to making patisserie her full time career with her favourite dish to make being a chocolate and raspberry cupcake. In the future she would love to become a cake decorator. Kay has worked in the RACV pastry kitchen while studying at Carrick and her favourite pastry café in Melbourne is Le Petit Gateau, part of RACV Melbourne.
Daniel Southwell, England Stage 6
Daniel is originally from the UK and was looking for a complete career change and new adventure. Studying cookery and moving to Melbourne fit right into his change of direction.
Daniel has always enjoyed cooking but it was never a career option until looking into career paths in Melbourne and coming across commercial cookery at Carrick. Daniel has been in Melbourne for 18 months and is still finding out everything he can about cooking before deciding what area of expertise he wants to focus on.
