A hair raising experience for students
Vampires, flamenco and African queens do not spell an average day in the classroom, but for eleven hairdressing schools in Melbourne it was all in a days work last Monday.
The inaugural International Hairstylists Society (IHS) ‘Battle of the Colleges’ hairdressing competition was held for hairdressing students at Crown Casino on Monday night. Competing schools showcased a range of hair creations on stage in front of a panel of judges and over 500 guests.
The IHS Battle of the Colleges was organised by the International Hairstylists Society, who developed the event as a way to introduce hairdressing students to the competitive, creative environment of a hairdressing show.
Carrick’s team of six students held their own in the competition. Inspired by fashion, film and imagination, they themed their vampy look around the story of Dracula.
The team, made up of students from Nepal, New Caledonia, India and Mauritius put their practical skills to the test to develop a five minute presentation.
Judging was based on the theme, creativity of the hairstyles and the execution of the presentation in terms of make-up, costumes and choreography, just as professional hairdressers would be judged.
The Battle of the Colleges highlighted the calibre of international students studying hairdressing in Australia. Carrick’s students were chosen as the top in their class and are all working towards the goal of one day owning their own salons.
